FAQ

What exactly is the Sui Generis Seat?

The Sui Generis Seat is a seating system that can be attached to a Segway personal transporter.

How can I enjoy a seated ride using the Sui Generis Seat?

First, you need a Segway i2, x2, i2 SE or x2 SE personal transporter. Then you need to buy a Sui Generis Seat and attach it to the Segway platform.

Can I buy from you a Sui Generis Seat with the Segway platform attached?

No. You can only buy the seat from us because it is much more cost-effective to buy the platform locally.

How do I install the seat on the Segway? Do I have to drill anywhere?

The Sui Generis Seat comes with tools and instructions included and installation is very straightforward. It takes just one person with basic Segway knowledge to install the seat with the help of a second person (who can be anyone over 12 years old!). There are just 7 screws for the Single parking stand edition and 10 screws for the Double parking stand edition.

Will installing a Sui Generis Seat require any permanent modifications on the Segway?

No, it will not! You can unistall the seat at any time and have your Segway back at its former state.

Can Ι use any self-balancing platform with the SuiGeneris Seat?

No. You can use only an original Segway i2, x2, i2 SE and x2 SE platform. No other platform comes close to the Segway in terms of safety, robustness and reliability.

Where can I buy a Segway platform?

For newer models(Segway i2 SE and X2 SE), you can visit the global network of dealers on segway.com to find a Segway dealer in your area. Alternatively, you can buy a used Segway platform.

Should I buy a used Segway platform?

Used Segway platforms cost between 20% and 50% less than new Segway platforms. A used platform in good condition can be great value for money.

Where can I find a used Segway platform?

Check out local classified ads or online marketplaces like eBay or Craigslist. Segway tour operators are also a great source. If you cannot locate one in your area, take a look here or contact us and we’ll try to help.
They might be able to install the kit also (for some extra charge of course)

Is the Sui Generis Seat safe to ride?

Riding a Segway platform using a seat is as safe as riding a regular Segway. Please search for videos on YouTube demonstrating all the possible ways that you can fall off a Segway. Smart people learn from their mistakes, wise people learn from other people’s mistakes! Also watch this.

What happens in case of a Segway malfunction?

A Segway malfunction is possible although very rare. Any machine may stop working at some point. Segways follow a routine called “Emergency Shut Down” that gives you approximately 15 seconds to get off before the machine shuts down. Since you will be seated, you will have 15 seconds to deploy the parking stand. You only need 2 seconds for that!

What if a malfunction happens while I’m crossing a road? I can’t just stand up and go.

We created the Buddy Seat 2 for anyone who cannot afford to remain stuck on a non-working seated Segway. The Buddy Seat 2 has a second stand with caster wheels, which enable you to manually roll the Segway out of harm’s way.

Is the Sui Generis Seat a medical device?

No. A Segway platform with a Sui Generis Seat is a leisure vehicle. The Sui Generis Seat is simply an add-on that allows the use of a Segway in a seated position. It has a lot of features to support people with limited mobility but it is not a wheelchair alternative. Please read our Liability Waiver.

What maintenance does the Sui Generis Seat require?

The Sui Generis Seat is a very low-maintenance device and its construction was inspired by locks. How often do you service your lock?

Is the Sui Generis Seat rust-proof?

Yes! It is entirely made of stainless steel and aluminum so no worries about rust.

Does the Sui Generis Seat come with a warranty?

Of course. Please read it here.

My weight is 110 kg / 242 lbs. I have used a regular (stand-up) Segway in the past. Can I also use it with the Sui Generis Seat?

It is not recommended. The Segway maximum payload (rider and cargo) is 118 kg / 260 lbs. The Sui Generis Seat weighs 22kg / 48.50 lbs so do the math. Exceeding the Segway’s maximum weight capacity will not cause you to fall but pushing the limits of the platform will cause it to wear out much sooner.

Can I attach a trolley for carrying stuff?

We don’t recommend attaching a trolley because it will significantly reduce the vehicle’s braking ability.

I would like to be able to use the Sui Generis Seat both an a Segway i2 and a Segway x2. Is that possible?

Yes, it is! A Segway x2 can easily be transformed into a Segway i2 by changing the wheels and fenders. It is not possible the other way around (i2 to x2).l So if you want total freedom, we recommend that you buy a Segway x2 platform and an i2 wheel kit.

Can I customize my seat?

Of course! There are many customization options: You can choose the color of the seat’s upholstery, the seat and back height, the steering system you prefer, a single or double footrest or a reflective film. You can also send us your name or logo to be embroidered on the upholstery or laser-engraved on the base of the seat.
